Dedicated to Andrea de Cesaris, 1959-2014
In his third race since returning from a self-imposed two-year "retirement", Niki Lauda won the seventh United States Grand Prix West at Long Beach, ahead of Keke Rosberg. It was the 18th victory of Lauda's career, and his first for McLaren. Gilles Villeneuve crossed the line in third, but he was disqualified after the race when a protest of his Ferrari's rear wing was upheld by the officials.
As an aside, De Chesaris scored his sole F1 pole position, here leading Rene Arnoux and Lauda in the Alfa 182.

1982 Fiat 131 Volumetrico Abarth - Hard Blown Rally Ace
Words: Amazosan
Photos: Michael Ward
In hindsight, the Fiat 131's utilisation as a championship winning rally car may not seem unusual, but analyse the situation at the time of its genesis and suddenly it does seem a bit odd. Here you had sister marque Lancia with the fire-breathing Stratos, a mid-engine Ferrari V6-powered beast of a car, which then is replaced with a fundamentally dull family saloon. Sure, Ford (among many others) had made using their cooking saloons for rallying the norm, but even they had a flirtation with a purpose built mid-engined car in the shape of the GT70, but this turned out to be a dead end for Ford.

| With two other Abarths from the Auto Italia article |
The lovely example here is no. 156 of 200 and was imported from Italy in 2004 and has been featured in several UK magazines.
A car I really, dearly wish there were more of, just so I could have the chance to own one.

West Germany Motorcycle GP, Hockenheim, Sept 26th, 1982
Barry Sheene (no.7) alongside team-mate Steve Parrish (no.2). Both men failed to finish the race; Randy Mamola won on the HB-Suzuki RG500.

1982 Countach Factory Fuel-Injection Prototype
Spotted on Bring A Trailer last week, the Countach testbed used to finalise the fuel-injection system and the Federal bumpers; both items were needed pass the American EPA tests. And only 9000 miles to boot. Federal-spec Countachs; a guilty pleasure. Go on, buy it and feel dirty.

| 5 litre V12, Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. Which probably means it does 3mpg and at idle sounds like a rockery in a tumble dryer. Trust us on this |
