Isle Of Man Tourist Trophy, 8 - 12 June 1970

Giacomo Agostini riding the MV Agusta 350cc racer at the 1970 Isle Of Man TT.
Agostini dominated the 1970 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season, having won nine of the twelve races (the 350cc class wasn't contested at the French or Belgian GPs he didn't race a 350 at the Spanish GP); he also won ten out of  the twelve 500cc races ran in 1970.

1970 Plymouth Barracuda - Red Snapper

Given the history, talent and resources that Paul Lee (the owner of this Plymouth Barracuda) has available, this car just had to be built.
Paul has not only raced Funny Cars and has degrees in Finance and Law, but he also owns McLeod Racing, renowned manufacturers of performance flywheels, clutches and driveline components. The car certainly seems to be the result of his skills; a rust-free California car with a Procharger-huffed 528ci Gen II Hemi V8 that 'cranks out an easy 1129bhp on 93 octane'. Yowza. But thats not all; Ridetech coilies suspend a Corvette C6-drived front suspension with a multi-link Strange rear axle at the back. The interior shows that such a monster fish needn't be as a sparse as an empty sardine ca either; alcantara covers the dashtop and  Corbeau bucket seats, while a Racepak digital dash cluster reminds the driver of this cars track aspirations.

Diggin' In The Crates - 1970 Toyota Celica A20 Japan Brochure

I'll say it for you: ドăƒȘăƒ–ăƒ«, or the nearest I can get to in English, wibble. Thats the reaction I had when I first saw the  big ol' box of Japanese car brochures I won on eBay recently (to put next to the other big boxes of car brochures I have, but hey). There is something about the way they lay out their car literature that makes me feel like a kid in a sweet shop; is it the multiple small images crammed onto one page, the moody looking action shots or seeing versions of regular UK-market Japanese cars that never made it to these shores? Eh, I'm gushing a little, but know this: enjoy the scans of this A20-series Toyota Celica brochure, theres a lot more stuff to come.

Motor Trend 500, Riverside International Raceway, January 18, 1970

After years of racing and winning with Fords, Dan Gurney switched to the Plymouth camp. Here, he's seen negotiating turn 1 in a 1970 Superbird during that years race. Gurney qualified on pole to the delight of his fans but encountered problems during the race. He completed 180 of the 193 laps in the Petty Enterprises entry but still brought her home under power for a sixth place finish. Richard Petty himself finished 5th in his first race back with Plymouth.
A.J. Foyt was the winner of the race in his 1970 Ford Torino.

Monaco GP, May 10, 1970

The race was won by Jochen Rindt in the Lotus 49 chassis; the team decided to use it instead of the new 72. Jack Brabham lead the race until crashing on the last corner of the last lap, but recovered to finish second.

1970 Ford Torino - Fried Green Tomato

Like the First-gen Charger in the previous post, another criminally overlooked shape thanks to the exploits of a certain red-with-white-stripe '74 model car in Starsky & Hutch (from the ugly '73-'76 range). The 1970 range was arguably the best-looking of the breed; the coupĂ©s and convertibles are fabulous-looking devices in particular with the droolworthy Cobra models the stuff of idle daydreams (the Talledega models, developed for NASCAR, are a subject for another day).
Mark Bowler's fine example started life as a GT, a two-owner car with 61,000 miles. The car was given a Pro Touring makeover, but with a twist - an automatic gearbox. Y'see, Mark runs Bowler Performance Transmissions, a company dedicated to custom-built, performance-oriented Ford auto gearboxes for the person who doesn't want to 'row his own', so to speak. And like with the Charger, this car gets used, as the pictures attest; no wonder the paintwork was kept all original.
